Do you have a child? A young niece or nephew? Perhaps a neighbor with children? Have you had the experience of being asked irritatingly about almost anything by a child? Sometimes so feeble that you get annoyed…and can’t find the exact words to answer? That is very typical. Children are always hungry for knowledge, innocent and eager to learn everything they want. That’s what makes them vulnerable, they’re like sponge, they absorb almost everything that comes across. Reason enough to make them victims of anxiety.

Unlike what we commonly know, a child doesn’t always forget, maybe we thought that after a stressful encounter, a child just plays or laughs it off. Studies have shown that there are many factors that produce anxiety children. The many radical social changes today brought about most of these factors. According to statistics, divorce rates and crime levels are tremendously rising year after year. Who are the most prone to the effects of these social disturbances? Children, of course. When parents claim they have irreconcilable differences and resort to divorce, would any rational explanation make a child understand? When he has to make difficult choices like choosing which parent to go with? Would it be just as simple as choosing pizza or chicken for dinner? Or when he sees violence on TV or inside his own home? Will he be quick to forget or understand that it’s not good? Of course, it is obvious that these situations would definitely develop an anxiety child, maybe not instantaneously but eventually.

Yet these factors are major and obvious, that many parents and adults always find ways and means to protect the child from anxiety, such as counseling and family therapies in children exposed to violence or children of divorced parents.

However, there are countless other factors that produce the anxiety child. Most often than not, these factors are neglected and considered as “just normal”. For instance, a child may develop anxiety if he is always bullied at school, or he may have anxiety waiting for future events to happen. We commonly relate fear in a child as a normal thing, such as fear of the dark. A fear most of us encountered when we were children, and thought it will just go away, but didn’t those sleepless dark nights caused us terrible anxiety? The regular visit to the dentist may be just routine for an adult or for a parent, but for the child this could be a dreaded event that causes anxiety. Little and innocent things that we thought are just part of growing up could be causes of anxiety, that produces lifelong battle against stress and depression.

Almost always, these major and minor factors involve the participation of family, relatives, and peers. Vigilance is the best key, concerned adults should observe and watch for signs that an anxiety child is developing. Some symptoms are physical, such as being sickly and weak; others are behavioral such as excessive fear or stammering. No matter how simple or common these signs are, they should not be overlooked. Remember that a great deal of a person’s adult life is a result of what he has been through as a child.

There is a short prayer that almost instantly comes into my mind when I am exposed to a stressful situation. The Prayer for Serenity that goes “Lord, grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”. A very short prayer, yet it gives many solutions to help me face my anxieties.

Try this simple prayer as your guide to anxiety help. Believe me, it works!

Try to assess the situation; is it beyond your power to control? Maybe what’s stressing you out is the thought that, if you could have done something, if you could have given the person a chance, or if you just tried your friend’s advice, things would have been different. The many “if only” can give you a lifelong depression, full of frustrations and regrets. Learn to have the serenity to accept the things you cannot change. Let go.

But we are not always powerless. Most of the time, we have the ability to change the situation or the things around us, things that make us strive harder, be stronger, things that make us fight back. When these trying times come, analyze… what is the best solution? Develop the courage in you, make a move, and take control of the situation. Nature works in wonders; even animals adapt and help themselves to survive. We human beings are the superior form of life, with more reason we can develop strategies and techniques, evolve… to rise against all odds. The best form of anxiety help… Have Courage. Don’t allow yourself to be drowned.

Finally, discern the things, the situation that causes you anxieties. Some occur over and over, while others are new to us that we fail to rationalize. Determine which situation can be controlled? Which are you powerless to change? If you have learned to do this on a daily basis, even with little things and simple situations, you might not notice it but you could have the wisdom. To be able to identify the things you can change and the things you cannot is not simple. But when you learn to do this, it is a very good anxiety help.

These are my very own basic anxiety help. It has done wonders for me. Maybe it could do the same for you. There are also many other ways to help yourself free from anxiety attacks. Always think that no man is an island, reach out for others, ask for support, or give support. It will greatly help if you hear others, sharing the same burdens you have, and realize that they have tried adaptive ways to control their anxieties in the same situations. Another form of anxiety help is so simple that we forget it works in many ways…relax! Don’t overstress yourself. Life is too short to live it all in misery. Then again, the simple things in life are so difficult to do. If everything comes out of hand, If your anxieties manifest in ways that calls for medical or professional concern, don’t hesitate to admit it, consult a therapist.
